Pa. only state that doesn’t allow local police to use radar guns to track speed

WE HAVE A CREW RUSHING THERE RIGHT NOW. THERE IS A NEW PUSH TO OPEN UP ACCESS TO RADAR GUNS TO ALL POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN PENNSYLVANIA. ONLY STATE POLICE CAN USE A RADAR GUNS. NOT EVERYONE THINKS IT’S A GOOD IDEA.HERE’S MORE ON THE STORY FROM AARON MARTIN. Reporter: WE ALL HAVE ROADS IN OUR COMMUNITIES WHERE PEOPLE CAN SPEED EASILY. WHAT ONE LOCAL LEGISLATOR IS PUSHING TO DO IS GIVE POLICE A NEW TOOL TO HELP ENFORCE SPEED LIMITS. WITH THE STATE TROOPER USING THE RADAR GUN THIS IS A LEGAL, BUT ANY OTHER COMMUNITY WITH A SPEED GUN WOULD MAKE IT ILLEGAL. YOU NEED TO SEND THE MESSAGE THAT YOU’RE GOING TO ENFORCE THESE SPEED LAWS. Reporter: A BILL IN THE LEGISLATION WOULD ALLOW ALL POLICE AGENCIES TO USE A RADAR GUN. THE BILL HAS OPPONENTS LIKE THE NATIONAL MOTORIST ASSOCIATION. EVERY OTHER STATE HAS A LOT OF REVENUE BASED FOR-PROFIT ENFORCEMENT. Reporter: WE SPOKE TO HIM ABOUT SOME FUNDAMENTAL CONCERNS AND HOW IT BE USED BY LOCAL POLICE AND PENNSYLVANIA. RADAR WHETHER IT’S LOCAL OR STATE POLICE IS EXCLUSIVELY USED IN SPEED TRAPS. Reporter: HE BELIEVES WITH PROPER TRAINING, CALIBRATION, IT CAN PREVENT THE SYSTEM FROM BEING A TAX ON THE DRIVERS. I THINK MOST MUNICIPAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS KNOW THAT THIS CANNOT BE USED AS A SPEED TRAPS, THAT IS NOT THE PURPOSE OF IT. AND THEY WILL BE AUDITING AGAINST THAT. Reporter: THE COMPANION THE BILL BEFORE LEGISLATORS WAS REINTRODUCED. THEY SAY THAT THEY ARE CONFIDENT THAT THERE WILL BE ENOUGH SUPPORT FOR IT TO POTENTIALLY BECOME A LAW.
